Lost & Found / Sonic Vista
Barrow in Furness / 2001-2002
collaboration with Ben Coode Adams & Kate Davis

annbench

Commission to create a unique audio experience in and around the town of Barrow in Furness, Cumbria, England. To place 12 Sonic Vista benches along a route through the town centre, installing different audio content on each one to create a perambulatory narrative experience, using the town itself as a prop in the story.
lostandfound

Having selected the 12 locations, local writers and poets were invited to submit proposals which would use these physical locations as the setting for short fictional narratives. The majority of writing was undertaken by local writer/poet Kate Davis, who has since become a regular collborator.
We worked with local amateur actors and youth groups to record the 24 episodes - 2 per location - which were embedded onto the benches in situ.

It was proposed that the community takes over guardianship of the project, so that the content be updated as and when they wish. A map and free headphones are available at the town library.
mayorbribery

The project was launched by the Mayor of Barrow in May 2002. The fact that the mayoress (L) and her deputy are sitting either side of the word BRIBERY inscribed into the backrest is purely incidental, and should by no means be taken as a slur on the fine offices of Barrow Borough Council.
