LUV Gallery, Govan / March 2006

An interactive, mixed-media installation, which uses the new technology of ‘audiophotography’ to explore new ways of telling stories. Developed by Hewlett Packard's research labs, we were invited to explore how this technology might be used as a community tool for the creation of an oral history archive. Our proposal was to curate and design an exhibition space within the local community of Govan, for which we would create all content from interviews and field A/V recordings. For the duration of the show visitors and local residents would be asked to contribute their own audio-photos, with technical assistance from the gallery staff.

Local arts organisation Linthouse Urban Village (LUV) offered us their gallery space, which is in the heart of the community; open, accessible and free.

Pre-recorded audio files are triggered by placing photographs onto the surface of the ‘Weegie’ table, which can accommodate up to 18 different images at any one time.

The audio is played through small speakers, positioned around the table; the surface of which acts as the physical control interface – pull the image closer to you, the soundtrack gets louder. Push it away to lower the volume. Pass it across the table to the person opposite and the sound appears there!

6 audio-photography 'stories' were created for the show, each set in Govan but exploring different ways in which the medium might be exploited in the future.

Each ‘story’ comprised of a set of 3 audio-photos, built around a principal narrative, augmented with sound effects, music etc. These compositional ‘sets’ are then re-configured by the listener as they interact with the stories but there are no rules and no synchronised starts, so every hearing of each story is a unique experience.

Themes covered included: life at the BAE shipyard, cafe life, politics, architecture, Glasgow's love affair with country music and the impending smoking ban.
